WAR IN IRAQ

April 11, 2008 by religionandpoliticsgeek

America is bogged down in a lengthy and costly war in Iraq with no apparent end.  How did we get ourselves into such a disastrous conflict?  President Bush led our nation into war in Afghanistan after the terrorist attack on our country on September 11, 2001.  We were on the verge of driving Al Qaeda and the fanatical Taliban regime out of Afghanistan when the Bush administration diverted its attention away from Afghanistan to Saddam Hussein and Iraq.

The reason for the Bush team’s obsession with Iraq has not been clearly established, but the disastrous results of their decision to invade Iraq are evident.  Our nation has lost in excess of 4,000 brave soldiers in Iraq, with another 30,000 being wounded, many grievously.  Tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have also been killed.  Our troops were sent into battle with insufficient body armor and inadequate armor for vehicles.  The direct cost of the war is approaching a trillion dollars, with the indirect cost being much higher.  The fiasco in Iraq has alienated many of our staunchest allies and brought about bitter division among our citizens.

The war in Iraq is rife with inaccurate intelligence, bad decisions, poor planning, incompetence, and corruption.  The Bush administration cherry-picked and manipulated faulty intelligence data to justify their predetermined plan to invade Iraq.  The Bush team claimed Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and alluded to close ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda terrorists.  Both of those claims proved to be false.

The Bush administration expected a quick and easy victory over Saddam Hussein’s regime, which they considered to be weak militarily.  Not nearly enough troops were committed, Iraqi weapons and munitions depots were left unguarded after the initial invasion, Iraq’s borders were not sealed for terrorists, the widespread insurgency was not anticipated, and Saddam Hussein’s capable and experienced army was disbanded rather than recruit its troops for internal Iraqi security forces.  Iraq is now a breeding ground and training field for terrorists.  The Bush team did Osama bin Ladin a huge favor by invading Iraq.

Tens of billions of dollars have been wasted in Iraq because of Iraqi government corruption, fraudulent invoicing by sole-source contractors, theft by civilian and military personnel, shoddy Iraq reconstruction work, and almost non-existent oversight.  Clear goals for Iraq have never been defined by the Bush administration, and a viable exit strategy was never developed.  We are stuck in Iraq in the midst of internal strife and terrorism with no viable way out.  It will take years to clean up the gigantic mess created by the Bush administration.  I do not envy our next president his or her task in Iraq.

WHAT GOD DESIRES OF HIS PEOPLE

March 17, 2008 by religionandpoliticsgeek

A vast majority of Christians harbor a

sincere desire to please God with their

ministry and service, and they claim

the Bible supports their particular

priorities.  So why do we see bitter

conflict among believers with regard

to Christian priorities in our politicized

society?

Social conservatives (religious right)

focus on moral and social issues such as

abortion, homosexual rights, state-

sponsored prayer in public schools,

posting the Ten Commandments in

government facilities, and other such

issues.  More moderate Christians

emphasize helping the poor and weak,

eliminating social injustices in our

society, protecting the environment,

and similar social ministries.

What does God expect of Christians

today?  Old Testament Scripture

directed the Israelites to care for and

stand up for downtrodden people of

their day, namely the orphans, aliens,

widows, and other powerless people.

Numerous passages such as Isaiah

10:1-2 and Zechariah 7:8-10 stress

that command, and Micah 6:6-8 sums

up Old Testament priorities for God’s

people.

With what shall I come before the

Lord and bow down before the

exalted God?  Shall I come before him

with burnt offerings, calves a year

old?  Will the Lord be pleased with

   thousands of rams, with ten

thousand rivers of oil?  Shall I offer

   my firstborn for my transgressions,

the fruit of my body for the sin of my

soul?  He has showed you, O man,

what is good.  And what does the Lord

require of you?  To act justly and to

love mercy and to walk humbly with

   your God.

Acceptance by God cannot be achieved

through offerings, sacrifices, and other

religious rituals and trappings.  Our

relationship with God can be right

only if we have right relationships

with others.  We must be merciful,

compassionate, fair, and just in our

relationships with other people,

especially with those in need.

The New Testament contains similar

instructions to Christians.  The Apostle

Paul gives us general guidelines for

living in Galatians 5:16-26.  Our

relationships with others should be

characterized by the fruit of the Spirit,

nine inner qualities produced by the

Holy Spirit working in a Christian’s

life.  A life pleasing to God is summed

up in James 1:27.

Religion that God our Father accepts

as pure and faultless is this:  to look

after orphans and widows in their

distress and to keep oneself from

   being polluted by the world.

A Christian lifestyle pleasing to God

involves care for the poor, needy, and

helpless in our society, thus reflecting

our compassion for others.  It also

involves a moral and upright lifestyle,

not contaminated by the immorality

and wickedness around us.  Neither

Micah or James tells us to change

others; we should not try to impose our

religious beliefs and practices on them.

God alone can change people.

How can we best apply these Biblical

truths to today’s politicized society?

Issues involving religious expressions

and trappings, religious rituals, and

like superficial matters are relatively

unimportant.  Christians should

concentrate on our primary concern,

ministry to the social ills afflicting our

society.

Future blogs on this website will delve

into some of the individual issues

confronting Christians today.  Also,

Herschel Hill’s latest book, PLEASING

GOD:  THE JESUS AGENDA, presents a

comprehensive study of those issues.

That book is available through book-

stores, amazon.com, and other

internet sites.  Autographed copies at

SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE

March 10, 2008 by religionandpoliticsgeek

Controversial religious, moral, and social

issues have entered the political arena in

America.  A number of those divisive issues

have constitutional implications as well,

especially the ones covered by the first portion

of the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Congress shall make no law respecting an

establishment of religion, or prohibiting the

   free exercize thereof;

The courts have consistently interpreted the

First Amendment to mean separation of

church and state, a practice which has served

our nation well for over 200 years.  Quite

simply, separation of church and state

prohibits outward expressions of religion in

public forums such as public schools and

government facilities.

The religious right rejects separation of church

and state; they interpret the First Amendment

to mean freedom to express one’s religious

views at any time at any place, including

public schools and government facilities.

That interpretation enables social

conservatives to justify state-sponsored

prayer in public schools, posting the Ten

Commandments in government facilities,

and teaching creationism (intelligent design)

in public school science classes.

The First Amendment also has implications

with regard to public-funded vouchers for

private religious schools and use of public

funds by religious organizations for charitable

causes.  Strict control must be exercized to

prevent use of public funds to advance one

religious view over all others or to impose one’s

beliefs and religious practices on others.

Separation of church and state is a

fundamental tenet which impacts a number

of the contentious issues in our society.  Future

blogs on this website will address some of those

divisive concerns.  A comprehensive discussion

of those divisive issues is also presented in

Herschel Hill’s book, PLEASING GOD:  THE

JESUS AGENDA.  It is available through

bookstores, amazon.com, and other internet

sites, and autographed copies can be obtained

through this website.

CHRISTIAN PRIORITIES AND JESUS CHRIST’S PERSONAL MISSION

March 5, 2008 by religionandpoliticsgeek

How can Christians set priorities pleasing to

God in today’s politicized society?  Perhaps the

first step is to emulate our perfect example,

Jesus Christ.  Jesus came to earth in the flesh

to provide a way to reconcile sinful human-

kind to Holy God.  He accomplished that

redemptive task by sacrificing Himself on the

Cross at Cavalry to atone for our sins.  But,

how did Jesus define His own personal mission?

We find the answer to that question in the

Gospel of Luke.

Luke 4:18-19 (NIV):

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he

has anointed me to preach good news to the

poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for

the prisoners and recovery of sight for the

blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim

the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Luke 7:22 (NIV):

So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and

report to John what you have seen and

heard:  The blind receive sight, the lame

walk, those who have leprosy are cured,

the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the

good news is preached to the poor.”

Included in Jesus’ mission on earth was

physical ministry to the poor, sick, weak, and

oppressed people of His day, and Christians

today would do well to use His mission as a

ministry standard.

Today’s society is much more complex than

that of Jesus’ day, so our task is to determine

how we can best apply Jesus’ ministry

standard to the many controversial issues

facing Christians today.  How does Jesus’

mission relate to abortion rights, state-

sponsored prayer in public schools, teaching

creationism in public school science classes,

protecting the environment, caring for the

helpless and downtrodden in our midst, and

providing equal opportunities for all citizens,

among others?

Future blogs from this site will apply Biblical

teaching to numerous religious, moral, and

social issues in today’s society, and Herschel

Hill’s latest book, PLEASING GOD:  THE JESUS

AGENDA, is a comprehensive study of those

controversial issues.  It is available through

bookstores, amazon.com, and other internet

sites.  Also, autographed copies are available

through this website.

AMERICA, A DIVIDED COUNTRY

March 3, 2008 by religionandpoliticsgeek

America is a bitterly divided country.  We have

an extremely partisan political system, big

money has corrupted politicians and politics,

religious fundamentalism has entered the

political realm, we have experienced an

Executive Branch power grab, our environment

has been abused, and the disastrous war in Iraq

has added to the polarization of our people.

Future blogs on this site will explore the

emergence of this division over the last 25 years

and identify primary sources of the division.  A

book by Herschel Hill, AMERICA, A HOUSE

DIVIDED, provides an in-depth look at the

polarized state of our nation, applies Biblical

teaching to the division, and suggests practical

ways to reduce the partisanship in America.

This book is available through bookstores,

amazon.com, and other internet sites, and

autographed copies can be obtained directly

from the author at reduced prices.

DILEMMA FOR CHRISTIANS

March 1, 2008 by religionandpoliticsgeek

With all the controversial issues in today’s

politicized society, what are Christians to do?

Should we pursue the agenda of the religious

right dealing with abortion, homosexuality,

euthanasia, state-sponsored prayer in public

schools, teaching creationism in public school

science classes, posting the Ten Commandments

in public facilities, and stem cell research?  Or,

should we follow the lead of moderate Christians

who emphasize ministry to poor and helpless

segments of our society, stamping out social

injustices, protecting the environment,

providing equal opportunities for all citizens,

and eliminating other social ills afflicting our

nation?

Future blogs on this site will delve into many

of those issues, but a new book by Herschel Hill,

PLEASING GOD: THE JESUS AGENDA, contains

an in-depth look at controversial issues

confronting Christians today.  This book is

available through bookstores, amazon.com,

and other internet sites.
